June 2008... |
Somewhere in the bustling town of Grand Mbour, in a neighborhood called Medine, a sign on a building reads: |
AVENIR-PLUS; Private Institution
ENROLLMENT HAS COMMENCED
| | |
It's the beginning of an adventure...
Who we are: Along with a group of Senegalese teachers, who came together and decided to create a private school with no religious affiliation, I saw the sign and decided this was the right place for me.

It all begins in mid-October, when Avenir Plus opens its door to its two different buildings:
- The Preschool / Elementary School |
- The Middle School / High School |
The school covers every class from kindergarten to “Terminale” (the equivalent of 12th grade in the US) and prepares its students for the “IB (international baccalaureate) Sénégalais”. All of our courses are taught in French. Unfortunately, since the registration for schools in Senegal normally happens during the first few days before/after school has started, it became extremely difficult to estimate the number of students enrolled in the school this year.
| |
However, we're pleased to announce that, this year we have more than 400 students; not mentioning the younger children who will arrive in kindergarten throughout the year and students transferring from other areas. Currently, we're renting 2 buildings; 1 for the middle and high school and the other for kindergarten and elementary. Apart from the buildings, there's a playground adjacent to the kindergarten/elementary building. To meet the schools' needs we had to modify the interior and exterior of the buildings, along with the purchase of numerous tables and benches for the students. These changes represented a large, but unavoidable, cost. |
